Our History
Our Beginnings
The history of Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club dates back to November 1910, when The Geelong Advertiser reported on the club’s first-ever meeting. After many years running alongside the Newtown (Senior Matting) Cricket Club, the two merged in 1948 to form the club we know today.
The Two Blues have since built a reputation as one of the Geelong Cricket Association’s most successful and well-administered clubs.
Our History
On-Field Success
Our proud record includes 60 senior premierships (20 First XI District titles) and 40 junior premierships — making us the first GCA club to reach the milestone of 100 premierships. We’ve also won the prestigious Club Championship eight times. Alongside our premiership success, Newtown & Chilwell has consistently set the standard in coaching, facilities, fundraising, and junior development.
Our History
Our Legacy
The club has been fortunate to be guided by outstanding administrators, many of whom have also held leadership positions within the Geelong Cricket Association and Victorian cricket. Notably, former president and life member Bob Merriman rose to become Chair of the Australian Cricket Board.
On the field, we’ve produced six first-class cricketers including Australian captain and 1948 “Invincible” Lindsay Hassett and Test opener Ian Redpath. We have also had three Australian Under-19 representatives, such as Tim Anderson, now ICC Development Manager (Asia/Pacific).
Player Insurance
Players are reminded that the security and insurance of personal items, including cricket equipment, is each individual’s responsibility. Please be vigilant with both club and personal property, and avoid leaving valuables unattended. Items may be left securely with the scorers or locked in the club office upstairs in the Sporting Complex.
The club cannot accept responsibility for lost or stolen property, and any incidents should be reported to the President or Secretary. In addition, all players are strongly encouraged to take out private health insurance and individual ambulance cover.
JLT Cricket Insurance
All members of N&CCC including players and volunteer staff have basic medical and public liability coverage under the National Cricket Insurance cover with JLT Cricket
