Our Beginnings
Organised cricket has been played in Geelong since 1841, when the Corio Cricket Club first took the field. By 1859 four clubs shared the district, and Newtown Cricket Club itself formed in 1883, playing on matting wickets for decades.
Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club traces its own formation to a single meeting on 25 November 1910, when Geelong’s turf competition redrew itself around residential boundaries. The club’s first president, Cr. J. Cairns, had already led the earlier Clarendon club for twenty seasons before taking on the same role here. That first turf competition lasted only three seasons before Geelong Cricket Club took the district’s only turf wicket for a higher grade, and turf cricket wasn’t played again locally until 1928.

While turf cricket paused, Newtown Cricket Club kept playing almost without a break through the matting association, winning back-to-back premierships out of Queens Park in 1928/29 and 1929/30, the same year turf cricket returned and the Newtown & Chilwell Turf Cricket Club was formed. For a decade the two clubs ran side by side, briefly joining forces between 1936 and 1938.
In 1947 the Geelong Cricket Association combined turf and hard wicket into one competition, and in 1948 the two clubs merged for good, taking the name of the council boundary they called home. The club has fielded teams under that name ever since, and has since produced alumni including Australian captain Lindsay Hassett, Test opener Ian Redpath, former Australian Cricket Board chair Bob Merriman, and ICC Asia/Pacific development manager Tim Anderson.

Keeping our players, volunteers and members safe, on and off the field
Personal Property
Players are responsible for the security of their own property, including cricket equipment.
Keep valuables secure and avoid leaving them unattended
Items can be left with the scorers or locked in the club office upstairs in the Sporting Complex
Lost or Stolen Property
The club cannot accept responsibility for lost or stolen property. Report any incidents to the President or Secretary.
